 What is this blog about?

The posts in this blog are a companion for  my 2015 UGA Press book:

Marsh Mud and Mummichogs: an Intimate Natural History of Coastal Georgia.  I hope you enjoy learning more about the habitats and wildlife of the Georgia coast!

My son Jared took this photo of me with Max , our australian shepherd, in the alpine flower garden on Marys Peak in Oregon's coastal range.  I have had a life-long fascination with the natural world.  Born in Dublin, GA, I grew up on the Atlantic coast of Florida.  After graduating from Emory University in Atlanta, I earned a PhD in zoology with a focus on ocean ecology at Duke University In Durham, NC.  I was a research scientist at the University of Georgia Marine Institute on Sapelo Island from 1974 to 1990.  My  husband, Barry, and I worked as a team researching salt marsh estuaries in Georgia, and then, after moving to Oregon State University in Corvallis, we joinly studied upwelling ecosystems off Oregon, as well as arctic and subarctic marine food webs.  We are avid nature photographers and birdwatchers. Our two sons, Aaron and Jared, who spent their formative years on Sapelo Island, live in Portland and Springfield, OR.

Update: In 2016, Barry and I received the prestigious Redfield Lifetime Achievement Award for the research we did during our career from the Asociation for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography.
